Compiler Construction

Hi,

As an active member of the Apache Flex project I have felt the need to learn a little bit more about compiler theory and construction. I have been wanting to learn more about language parsing and translation for quite some time so this seemed like the perfect excuse to speed things up. This post will be used to share my thoughts around the subject and also to list the materials I find when investigating the matter.

Apache Flex is podling

Hi,

Peter Elst, who is well known to anyone who's been in any way involved with Flash and/or Flex, has just published the first post on the Apache Flex blog. As he says this is the beggining of a new era for Flex and web application development. In a moment where several alternative technologies are being put forward as the best solution for this kind of software development, Flex moves to a new home.

Apache is known for housing several of the most successful open source projects and we're all expecting that Flex will joint that same rank. The community is very active around the new podling which is definitely a great outlook. And don't forget to check out the logo contest, it's a great way to get known.

Take care.

On the Future of Web Development

Recently, in a private forum, as happened in many other forums, public and private, the issue of Flash/Flex versus HTML rose for the nth time. While I'm tired of this whole discussion and believe that it is sucking the very energy and life out of our minds, energy that we should be using to build extraordinary experiences everyone would benefit from.

Instead we engage in fruitless dispute about what's best for what. And we part and re-engage in the same senseless altercation of reasoning and ill meant words that only do the bidding of those who would put a hold on the planet if that provided some sort of financial gain. This post is not about who’s the best, the biggest, the strongest or the fittest. This post is about a declaration of intentions and at the same a call to action so that we grow out of this stupid feud and stand by what is most adequate for what we want to build regardless if it’s hip or looks good in one’s résumé.

The post is actually a message I sent as a response to a good friend of mine and I felt that it had a good view on how I feel about the way people are acting and, most importantly, reacting to the evolution of technology, specifically web technology.

If you're interested, read on! If not, well at least don't go around spreading half-truths and at the very least listen!

My MAX Experience

Adobe MAX 2011 was a very interesting event. Adobe refocused its core business as the provider of the best tools and technologies for the development of rich experiences across devices, platforms and technologies. Read on to see my personal views, as a Flash and Flex developer, on the event.

The Eee Pad Transformer: First impressions

There's a new kid on the block in the tablet computing scene. Asus has entered the tablet market with a full fledged very capable device with a very attractive price tag. Its cheap price, however, is no indicator of a second level device as many might expect. It big advantage over the competition is the fact that it, as its name goes, can be transformed into a netbook by attaching it to a mobile dock with keyboard and trackpad.

The Eee Pad sports a Tegra 2 processor and supports Flash which runs so smoothly inside web pages that you easily forget you are not using a laptop.
